Hi there

I've been reading Lately that corys need to go to the surface to "take a Breath".

Is this really needed?

What if I have a 60 cm High thank and not enought decor / Driftwood so that they can start their surface run from a higher point?

I've had 4 cory deaths when I moved them to the new 280 litres could it be because of this? Strange enought the Younger corys stayed alive.

Now that I think of the only corys that are alive are the ones who were bought to the new aquarium. and all the tranfers perished 1,5 month later.

Hope someone expain their behavory.

Thanks Miguel

Cories will usually take air from the surface no matter what water conditions are, much like bettas. They seem to do it more in oxygen-starved and/or polluted water, and also when they are respiring very quickly. It's normal for them to go up to the surface.

Two feet of water isn't too much for a Corydoras. Yours shouldn't have any problems reaching the surface if they need to. I would think that the deaths you experienced were due to a problem with the water. Maybe the old fish didn't agree with the shift in water parameters. This is possible if the older tank was dirty, since the new one would have far fewer pollutants. They may just have been stressed out by the move, and took a while to expire. It's really impossible to figure out exactly what the cause of death is now, if so many weeks have already passed.

To answer your question: No, I don't think that the fish died because of the tank's height.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

My tank is 60cm high & the Corydoras don't have any trouble going to the surface.
