I need to vent and be told that i'm not insane for thinking things went slightly wrong...


Me: I am calling to advise that my brother, who had his gas account with you, died a couple weeks ago and the account needs to be closed.

Operator: Account number?

Me: *gives account number and name*

Operator: Okay we can close the account, but he should of told us he was moving house. Is he there to talk to now?

Me: No he hasnt moved house, he is dead.

Operator: Okay so i'll send the final bill to *insert address he lived at*

Me: No, there is no one there. He lived by himself.

Operator: Well we cant close the account unless we speak to him.

Me: Excuse me? Have you been listening to me?

Operator: Yes mam.

Me: Well it sure doesnt seem like it. I've already told you twice that he is dead.

Operator: Well we need to send the final bill somewhere.

Me: Fine, send it to my address.

Operator: He has moved in at your house?

Me: *hangs up*

I sat stunned for a few minutes, thought about ringing back to clear it up with someone else and decided against it. If they cant train their staff to handle situations properly then they dont deserve to be paid the money owed. I hope her supervisor was listening to her call.

Wow! Lindy, Sorry to hear about your brother!*hugs & chocolate* I'm also sorry you had to deal with such a person regarding this most unfortunate news!

The easiest thing to do when you encounter someone like this is to simply ask to speak to the manager. We train all call center staff to hand the phone over without arguing. So I would assume that to be standard training. Remember there should always be a manager walking the floors or at worst a team lead that can help you.

That's just stupid. People like that shouldn't be allowed to breathe. Sorry you got this weeks idiot on the line, Lindy. How are you and your family doing?

unfortunately that happens in call centers everywhere, especially ones which reward you by the least time you're on the phone with customers. when i worked in a call center we had people who would give customers *extremely* incorrect info just to boost their call stats. ]:| so sorry you had to deal with that

Oh Lindy, its not uncommon... we were getting things for my Nan for YEARS after everyone had been notified...

the most amusing was one this year, what said something along the lines of:

"we notice that you haven't been active with our services recently, and we would love your feedback on what you think we could improve to make you return to using our services"

...

well, some checking files would be good

actually, calla brings up a good point. if your brother had any kind of estate left over, the bill collectors usually get their money last (at least in the US ). so don't worry if they don't get paid for the last bill, it sounds like they don't deserve it my father in law passed away last year and we had to go through lots of the same kind of thing for him. in fact, we still get his mail, including credit card applications (i still say we should fill one out just for laughs, but oh well)

Well I'm glad its not just me. At the moment everything is a bit numb and out of focus if you get what I mean.

Keith, we are taking things one day at a time. Its hard. The hardest part for me is seeing my usually vibrant happy parents so down and upset. It will help when we actually have a COD from the coroner.

All I can say is thank goodness for children who are too young to understand. Ryan has given us lots of things to smile and laugh at.
