Turkey meat is supposed to be sweeter in flavor than chicken meat.. To me, it also has a more "wild" taste than a regular chicken.. Of course after about another 3 more days of eating on that 23 pound bird, I'm sure it's going to be tasting alot like cardboard

used to live near austin, but i now reside in wisconsin i raised turkeys to show at the houston livestock show, but i didn't have "the secret" to raising good show turkeys, so i never got to see the $20k+ that the top turkeys took home

MoonDog: Do you live near the Houston Area? Just curious since you mentioned the livestock show and rodeo...

Tiny: Is it just fat making you sick? If it is and you have severe pain to go with it, check with your doctor (if you haven't already) it could be you gallbladder...Chamomile tea often helps with the symptoms, along with an extremely hot shower...

I dont - this year we're having monkfish, we were gonna have lamb, but the fat seems to be making me feel sick, so it's monkfish instead

That's a lot of turkey meat! We have them in my area, but we are allowed to hunt them during certain times of the year. Something about being out in the middle of no where...

Anyway, hope everyone had a great turkey day, and didn't eat too much turkey and pass out or anything...

They are native to the US and Canada, and the big ones can weigh up to 40 pounds

having raised turkeys, i can tell you that they can get up to much more than 40 pounds. but that is the domestic variety i'm talking about (the white turkeys), whereas you have shown a wild turkey (not the whiskey ). at the houston livestock show, the champion tom turkey usually ways upwards of 70+ pounds

Nope, doesnt' taste like chicken.

We had a good one, got up around 7 and baked 3 pies before even getting the turkey in the oven . I did the stuffing this year, as well as the gravy, we also had the required mashed potatoes, greens, yams, squash and pie...all home made, the way it's supposed to be :88).

cherry pie, peach pie, apple pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie

Then my mom tried to make us eat supper too !

Thanks for the info everyone!

Actually I have seen wild turkeys here - some turkey didn't think NZ had enough birds already and introduced them and set them free.

But I've never seen one served on a table and I have to admit I didn't have a grasp on how big they are! It was more I was wondering if they taste like chicken.

Here's what turkeys look like when they're alive.

They are native to the US and Canada, and the big ones can weigh up to 40 pounds (and amazingly, these birds can fly). They are in the pheasant family (Phasiandae or something like that), along with chickens, quails, peacocks, and pheasants of course. These birds are known for their stupidity, and many Native Americans were afraid to eat turkeys because they thought that their unintelligence would pass on to them.

Sometimes when I drive to school, big herds of turkeys block the road. They don't respond to the car's horn, so I have to get out and chase them off the street. Then they see their reflections in the car's bumpers and start attacking the car. Stupid birds. I wish I could shoot them and then give them to the needy for the holidays... They are overpopulated anyway.

Hope everyone had a good time today..

And here's an obligatory turkey picture.. I have no idea why I'm compelled to take one of these every year, but no one may touch the bird until it has been immortilized on film (or my memory card, as the case may be)..

Ah yes. There are non-huntable turkeys around my home too. Something about discharging a firearm within city limits... ok, I don't know if they'll let you bowhunt them either...

I had some very delicious turkey today. I was very thankful.

There's so many turkeys around here, but no one's allowed to hunt them. There's also too many peacocks...

Mmmm... Turkey.
