ooo Wish-ga that sounds very familiar... except it was my MOTHER who was the hairdresser! She used to promise me anything to get me to sit down in that chair, then once I sat down *SNIP!* no matter what I had asked for it ended up in the awful AWFUL style my mother liked and I hated. I looked just like someone had put a bowl on my head and cut around it. For years my nickname was 'helmet'

Then I left home and didn't have my hair cut for years. To my mother's horror it grew right down my back and I wouldn't let her touch it. It used to get tangled when the wind blew, or blow across my face so I couldn't see. It took hours and hours to dry if it got wet in the rain. But to me it represented freedom.

But one day I realised I'd become too emotionally attached to my hair and very vain about it. So I got one of those electric hair-cutter things, put a 1-inch comb on it and shaved all my hair off. My boyfriend almost cried!

It didn't suit me that short (in fact it looked apalling) but it put it into perspective for me. Hair is just hair. It's not my identity, it's not my beauty, it's not my opportunity for rebellion against an oppressive up-bringing. I am more than the sum of my hair!

I've known bad hair cuts, I've known good hair cuts, bad ones are the worst, luckily it will grow back, and books if it grows back within the month you are lucky!!! Mine takes forever to grow and as Les said Roe has quit/moved on so the fight to find another person who can figure out this "mop" baby fine, but tons and tons of it, with a mind of its own (I can literally have an afro of blonde hair if it isn't cut right, or if it isn't dried right...So I'm going to leave it, and not get it cut for fear of the doomed hair cut experience, at least at this length it can be tamed into a ponytail...best of luck books, only one month, you'll make it...Heidi

Beth, Beth, Beth.... I really KNOW that feeling. <wish-ga inserts own hair trauma story here>

My AUNTY was a hairdress and wanted to cut my hair cute and pixie style. End result I looked like a boy. Each time I would say I wanted to grow it out, it needed shaping as my hair is thick and curly so needs to be tamed as it grows out. "Yeah, yeah, I know exactly." says the Aunty hairdresser.

I thought it means she knows exactly what I want. It really meant that she knew exactly what she THOUGHT would look cute. End result - haircut like a BOY again.

But my mum would not take me anywhere else for fear of insulting my aunty. This went on for years. I would cry and cry. I was often taken for a boy right on the cusp of teenage years...AWFUL.

When I was 14 I insisted I be taken to a hairdresser that my neighbour went to. Mum made a big deal of bracing for what my aunty would say when she saw it.

Know what she said? "LOOKS FANTASTIC, I LOVE IT!"

PS My hair is now 1/2 way down my back and only my best friend who is a hairdresser can cut it. (she knows all about curly hair and my traumas).

Yeah, a good hairdresser or barber is worth their weight in gold. I was going to grow my hair out and it was going well, until Roe quit her job. Last haircut was awful. May just go back to getting it cut very short.

I'm so sorry... I have long hair and have had some bad haircut experiences... I was 11 and my grandmother wanted to have mine and my sister's hair cut in a short round style... I was short and round with a round face, I ended up looking like a boy and crying my eyes out for weeks. The expensive frame and photo that my grandmother wanted our hair done for is the one picture of us that I absolutely hate. My parents dont even have it hanging in their house because they know how much it still upsets me... and I'm 29 now so this was 18 years ago. I shake when I talk about it. Now I go to a wonderful woman (who also cuts my parents hair) and she's the only person I trust to cut my daughter's hair-she's 2 as of today. I have been using her for years and if she ever retires I'm sunk. Anyhow, all I can say is it will grow back, just avoid cameras 'til then.

Had that happen once....I was 12, and needed a haircut (understand, I have thick, curly hair that gets a trifle untidy when too long)...and I was new in the neighbourhood, and all my new friends told me to go to "Gino's". Gino was told that I wanted a light trim...he left me with barely enough hair to colour my head. It turns out the reason all my teen male friends were so hot on Gino's, was that he was your typical 'man's barber', and his waiting area had dozens of magazines...all of them Playboy or Penthouse.

My current hairdresser is great, and I have been going to her for 14 years now....I can't imagine what I will do if she ever retires.

I never get a hair cut as such. I have to ask for a search & find. As my grandson told me several years ago "Your skin is coming through your hair"

Ha Ha Keith
My grandkids say exactly the same thing to me, I just tell them I am getting taller.

Boy, I had the worst thing (figuratively speaking) happen to me this weekend. My mom had been nagging me for weeks to "get a haircut, you need at least a trim". She was finally able to drag me in, and man! What a soul-crushing experience! I asked Cindy (names have been changed to protect the guilty) to give me a "light trim, all around." Little did I know that she isn't very good with the "light trim"... Lady Luck sure didn't smile on me then! My ample head of hair was reduced to little more than a crew-cut, with both of my cowlick areas standing at full attention. Man... My hair was part of my personality, and as close to a "look" as is possible with me. Now that it's gone, some of my pride has gone with it. I don't look much like the media-celebrated "individual" anymore. Oh well, only a month until my hair grows back to a suitable length.

Just thought I'd share my experience with all of you folks.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Well at least no hair cuts for some time, also very easy to maintain while it is short.

only get your hair cut by someone you trust. don't *ever* go get a random haircut from someone who you're not comfortable with because they will NEVER cut it correctly

I know the feeling. I have 4 cowlicks, so if my bangs get cut just a little bit to short, they stick straight up. Luckily, this isn't a problem anymore as I'm growing my hair out. You're lucky that you're a guy though. They don't have quite as strict "unspoken" rules with peer pressure and the desire to look good. At least at this age, I guess.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.
