Can I do this? Or does the internet require this program to work?

It's been giving me serious problems lately, and I want it off of my computer for good.]

I run both side by side. You don't need it, but some pages are written in such a way (read:using frontpage) that they show up garbled in other browsers. you can still read them, but formatting is a bit out of sync.

so i have IE just sitting there in case i need it, and firefox as my default.

Clear out EVERYTHING, cookies, passwords, autocomplete, the whole lot. Update your virus scanner and adaware proggies and then unhook from the net and run them all.
Then stick in the new browser.

in theory you should be able to get rid of IE in Add/Remove programs...but i can't find it there
In internet options on your control panel tho, you can set your defaults and the like.

no, you *do* need it or else you won't be able to browse your computer at all, or make it boot, or anything else windows needs to do (stupid microsoft ]:|) you can just not use it for internet, but it must be installed on your windows system or else your windows will not be able to load correctly. you can use any browser you want for the internet (i recommend mozilla/netscape ) and just leave IE alone.

Right, forget all that lo, I just went and had a look. You cannot remove IE because it does have some system functionality which can cause problems. You can remove IE 6 so that users cannot use it
look here [link=http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293907]http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;293907" style="COLOR: #404040[/link]
and read the NOTE under the summary table, you can remove it in your slipstream disk if you use one (that's what unattend.txt means) so when you reinstall windows, it wont be accessible. You can also disable it using settings>control panel>add remove programs>add remove windows components, which should retain the code which is necessary for windows functionlity, but should make IE inacecssible.

I cleared my cookies, and things have gotten a bit better, but they are still appearing.

If I can't uninstall IE, is there any way I can command it to stop opening without my permission or something like that? I never use it for browsing the internet, but sometimes the browser I use doesn't work right unless I go and click connect on IE.

just set your other browser to be the default.

Uninstalling IE will NOT get rid of spyware if that's what you are trying to do. If you've used spybot/adaware/hijack this! with no joy, perhaps you should consider a reformat? Not using IE will not stop the spyware, it will just make it less visible to you.

I assume you've already updated your virus definitions and havent been able to shift it that way?
