The sun may set and rise again but light is given to us briefly and then we must sleep a perpetual night) It's always rather reminded me of "To the Virgins to Make Much of Time" in terms of its underlying message - life is short, why wait? ![]() It's worth finding a good English translation of the Carmina if you don't have Latin (if you do, Garrison's Student's Guide is the best, IMO), but skip over the Loeb Classics version, which simply omits translations or mis-translates anything they thought was unfit for the eyes of anyone who lacked Latin - meaning half the book, since Catullus is quite, erm, free with his words. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |
