Gender: Males develop noticeably larger odontodes on the snout margin prior to the evertible cheek odontodes and on the pectoral fin rays.
Breeding: Spawning is not easily induced, but is nowhere near as difficult as other notable members of the tribe ancistri, and spawnings are not an uncommon event. Cave spawners by nature, they will require tight fitting, preferrably rectangular (or, at the very least, flat bottomed) indentation in which to lodge themselves in to. Comments: Butterfly plecos can change their coloration to suit the substrate of their tank. They become dark colored in tanks with dark gravel, and vice-versa. They also change colors according to the time of day. These plecos don't usually harm live plants if they're fed properly. They are good algae eaters, and are good fish for a community fish tank.
