I would like to get a canister filter for my 55g moderately planted tank. I would like to stay around $100 if possible. I know Eheim is good, but I don't know the difference between the plus kit, the regular one, the professional one and the comfort one.
I want one that is pretty easy to maintain. Any suggestions?

I recommended my brother look at the Rena XP 2 for his 55g. It is about $140 CDN at Big Al's locally. Not sure what it would be in $US after shipping though.
In fact I'm looking at the smaller version for my 25g.

I just picked up an Ehiem ECCO 2233 on Ebay for my 55 after taking a poll here between that and the Filstar XP2. That thread is: http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/threads/17972.1.htm?16#.

Anyway, whichever you decide to go with, check Ebay first. I got mine slightly used for $50 with shipping. Hella deal if I do say so myself.

Hands down Eheim Ecco. For $89.99 you could get the 2236 good for up to 80 gallons.

Great filter. I have it on my 72g. You don't need any of the plus, professional or other stuff.

I have the ecco 2234 running on my 30 gallon tank at the office. It's rated for up to 75 gallons so should fit the bill quite nicely in your tank.

~super quiet

~fairly easy (for a canister) to maintain.

~really quiet

~3 media trays rather than 2 in the 2232

~almost silent.

^_^

Thanks everyone! I am going to check out all the suggestions. I won't be getting it for a couple months. It's sad...I'm already finding things to spend my tax return on. It will be spent before I get it!!

I am looking at getting a Fluval 404 for my 55 gal. tank soon. Right now I am running two Mellinium 3000 HOB filters on it. The filters are great I just want more setup options.

For $95 (U.S. at bigals) you can get an XP3 which would be great for 55 tons of filtration options. Rated for tanks much bigger. If you wanted to save a bit you could get a Emperor 400 HOB filter. They are great and rated for tanks up to 75 gal. They have lots of media options, 2 great big biowheels, and much higher flow rates than cannister. Plus much easier maint. They are less than $40. Good luck.

I have an Aquaclear HOB now and while I like it, I really want a canister filter.

seriously check out the rena filstar xp3. great canister, versatile and cheap to run. the sponges that it comes with will last years and you can fill it with matrix for bio, carbon, whatever. i have one and love it.

big al's also has the magnum 350 bio pro wich filters 350 gph and comes with a double bio wheel for benificial bacteria growth for $97. it is a little harder to matain then the other suggestions but i like the bio wheel and it is a pretty good filter, i currently run 2 of them on my 125usg(1 regular, 1 reg.+bio)

not to stir the pot, but....i own 2 magnum 350s and a rena filstar xp3 and i have to say i would take the xp3 any day over the mag350. the only good thing the 350s are good for is periodic polishing or chemical filtering. they are a pain to setup and the chintzy filter sleeves dont filter anything remotely small. you can really pack the xp3 with a lot of stuff to get the job done nicely. i run biowheels off of my magnums and my xp3. p.s. i love the biowheels, plus you can get them seperately to add to practically any p/h, canister, or pump.

What type of media do you use in your xp3? I was considering a fluval 404, after looking at the xp3 I think it is a better design for the same price.(the xp3 that is)

Well, I got the xp3 filter and haven't had the time yet to get it up and running. I was going to get the BIO-CHEM stars to put in one of the baskets. I think the biggest problem I have with the filter so far is what to put in it. I love the veriety of options that come with it though.
