Hi all. I currently have a ten and a 29 gal up and running. the ten holds a pair of ottos as well as a nice pair of betta, one male one female. The other is a community tank with a pair of yo-yos, six harlies, my last molly, and a rubbernose pleco.
I have a spare 5 gal which I used as a hospital/quarantine tank but now want it up and running. The plans thus far are a male betta and perhaps a female. Would a few khulies be ok in there? I think it would mebbe be a bit overstocked at that point. Maybe a male betta and some cards? Also, what could I put in there for plants? This tank has about 2.5 wpg.

Hi there,
couple things, you cant keep a male and female
betta together. He will kill her.
Choose one or the other.
Kuhli loaches grow to 4 inches, and need to be kept
in a trio or larger, and so are unsuitable for a 5g tank.

How about going with a female or male betta,
and an african dwarf frog and a nice apple snail?
Or you could go with a nice big group of Heterandia
formosa (like 10) and some cherry or ghost or bee shrimp.
Another option would be a pair of beckfords pencilfish and
some shrimp.
Or you could do 6 Corydoras Pygmaeus.
Group of Endlers could be worked too.
Any small tetra, lemons, neons, embers, or dwarf rasbora
would also work.

For plants, with 2.5wpg your options are good.
Java moss, java fern are nice, vallisneria spiralis
or corkscrew are nice, anubias nana sp. petite is nice too.

Considering the sizes of the fishes you want, you could probably fit up to two comfortably in the five gallon.

Are the bettas in your ten gallon mature? If they are and eager to breed (and if you want to keep the fry), then maybe you should save the 5-gallon to raise the fry after the father is done. Then again, the male could become more aggressive towards the female and you may have to move one into the 5-gallon.

I would not recommend trying to set up another pair in a 5-gallon because the current success you have in keeping both a male and female might not translate into success in a smaller tank, especially with a different pair.

Well, I've only had the female about five days, but I've noticed no agression at all so far. I'm thinking now to either drop the female into the community tank, or put the male in the five with perhaps a snail, and get about six cards for the female in the ten.

OK, so I put the male into the nice new (old, but new to him) five gal, had to change heaters cause it came up defective, and placed a nice school of neons in with the female, so now the stocking is like:
1 female betta
2 ottos
6 neons.
oughta be good now, wuz lookin for cards, couldn't find them at petsmart or petco. Know I've seen em there just recently, too.
