Will a black light put in with the standard white light harm the fish? Or just the black light.

Hi,
A standard Black Light will harm the fish eyes, and
yours as well.

If you want to look at the fish after the normal lights
go out, the I'd suggest you look into getting a set
of "Moon Lights."

As far as I know black lights should never be used in a tank at all as Frank mentioned it can be dangerous to your eyes as well. For what reason do you want to use them? I personally would stick to the good quality plant and daylight systems.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Yup , blacklights are seriously harmful, even for desert reptiles its recommended that they get no more than an hour a day, they will blind a fish, damage the upper slime layer and scales, and close exposure will damage the dermal layers enough so that the osmoregulatory balance of the fish will be affected, and cause cancer in short order. Dont put them in, and if theyre in take them out. It takes very few days to cause enough exposure to give a fish cancer even if they dont look affected. The damage can be done immediately, but the cancers take months to grow, but once its done, its done.

Ok thanks for the in put.
I wanna put the light in to brighten up the tank at night, especially the white stones and the pearl colors on the oscars.

And no I haven't even bought the lights yet, I just thought it would look nice, but if it's gonna harm the fish then I will have to settle for a moon light.

Lunar Links are a great affordable moonlight system they come in white red and blue. and only run about 11.00 US for a link 13 for the light (the light has the power adapter, the links plug into the light to extend the system.) I use these myself and have had a great experience with them. Only recommendation I can make about placement is to not go by the packaging It says one link per 2 ft. You need 1 per foor to cover the entire tank on a 20 inch deep tank.
