is it a good idea to change the gravel in your tank?? i know it has a LOT of good bacteria in it will the ammonia skyrocket or anything!

Hi,
If you change the gravel, then the tank will have to
recycle. If you have a filter already running for a
while, and continue to use it during the recycling
process, then it won't take as long as if you were
starting from scratch.

I wouldn't change all the gravel at once, but switch the gravel twice or thrice so that the good bacteria in the gravel isnt completely wiped out

dunno if this would work but...

try and put the new gravel in a dish or panty hose and let it get seeded from the tank then change the gravel after like 2 weeks, make sure the fishes are not in the tank during the change. put em back once the water clears.

About 3 months ago i changed the gravel of one of my tanks, i did it all at once and my 45G didn't even went through a mini cycle, since i didn't change the filter media for another 2 weeks, and i went for it and did it with fish in there and all, no deaths not even stress, they just stayed at the other side of the tank that i was working on, i guess that if you have good cycled filters there won't be any problem.

yea ur probably right... do u have a biowheel filter? cause those would mostlikely help alot

yes i do have a bio -wheel filter (i think you asked me)!what about adding different sized gravel and mixing it in or something~would that work!
