Don't make a deep bed of Sand & 1 inch will be enough.

In my experience, one inch of thinkness can be had by adding around 5kg (lil more than 11 pounds) of dry sand per square foot of the tank area..

So around twenty pounds should give me just under a one inch coverage, which seeing as I'm setting up a shell dwellers tank should be about right.

Hi,
Sorry I'm late with a response..
Here is a link to a substrate calculator. Plug in the
tank dimensions and the desired depth of substrate and
it will tell you how much you will need for that tank.

http://www.plantedtank.net/substratecalculator.html

Keep in mind that sand can compact over time leaving areas
of substrate devoid of any water movement and creating
anaerobic areas that can be toxic. You mention 2 inches
in depth, that - to me- is near the boarder line where
those situations can occur. Personally, I would use only
enough sand to cover the tank bottom up to the black
plastic framing, maybe an inch. I would also suggest
something to keep the sand stirred up (MTS, loaches, etc.)

I'm gonna be getting multi's, who are renound for their redecorating of the tank and especially of digging pits for their shells, so I don't think that will be a problem somehow

Thanks for the link
