Hi Everyone,
I always have a debate with a friend of mine regarding how high to fill our aquariums to the top. Your comments would be appreciated so we can come to some 'ruling' as to how far from the top do you fill your tank. I like to leave my water about 4cm (1 1/2" off the top as otherwise I find my bubbles leave to much green algae on the cover glass. : Your comments will be appreciated.
Thanks

I've found that if I fill the tank to the top and the tank is covered then the temp is also effected as temperature fluctuations that occur from ...say the rooms tempeature is not dissapated as readily as when there is a gap.
I do make sure that the water is to a level that covers my water return from the filter...this is just personal as a can't take the water fall sounds.

Thanks for the comment Zarrar. So when you say you fill it to the top are you talking of only 1 cm or so?? I'm just trying to get some measurements here so I can relay them onto my friend.

I have 2 HOB power filters on my 55. I keep the water level just below the water return, anywhere from 1/2 to 1 inch from the top. The lower the water level the more current gets generated. This has just been my experiance so I guess it would depend on what type of setup you have.

Hi Lowlight,
If you read my profile it will tell you about my tank some additional info is this: My tank is fitted with 36 watt Sylvannia Fluro light.
My tank is heavily planted with Swords, Anubias with some growing on driftwood, Crypts, Banana plants, mongo grass and various others. The bottom of my tank has a fine natural gravel and my filter system is the Eheim 2215.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm sticking to my normal level of fill.
If you'd like to see what that is some pics are here:

Is that an acrylic tank? If it is, then I assume it already has most of the top already attached. I keep my water level anywhere from 1/2 to 1 inch from the very top in my acrylic tank, but usually more in my glass tanks because the frame around the top makes the water level invisible, which I like a lot.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I fill the large tank to just below the glass support for the top which is about 20mm. The small tank I go to the base of the external plastic glass support which means I cannot see the water level at all it is about 10mm below the under side of the sunken glass top.

Yes you get algae on the underside of the glass so what just clean it of when you do the weekly water changes it only takes an extra minute or two .

With a small tank the higher the better as every Lt counts.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Hi, I do like bratty_girl29. I love the no water line look too. With my tank though, that still gives me a gap between the frame and the hood - you just can't see it. I love that look

Cheers

Thanks for your comments
Looks like I might try filling my tank to under the support glass. I'll see what it looks like and decide whether that will be the future fill line for me..
Cheers BubbleLover
