Okay I have this one ornament in the Platy tank that is hollow, every three to four months as I am cleaning the tank I flip it upside down and a large air bubble pops out. The opening to it is only a half inch above the gravel and there is no airstone close to it. So how does it get air inside it?!! Its the pagoda. Any Ideas?

Hi Jim,
Generally as the waste products decay within the gravel
gasses are given off. Most of the time one would not
notice them. In this instance you are trapping the gasses
under the ornament. This should be a hint that you need
to organize the aquascape of the tank so that you have
planted and non-planted areas and that you should be
vacuuming the gravel in each of the non-planted sections,
once section at a time, with each weekly water change.

I wouldve thought that the gas would be lethal to the fish, as the only mystery gas ive heard of is the gas given off by anerobic bacteria, which is lethal to fish i hear. I would hope that this dosent get released into the tank regularly, and i would bury the pagoda or put it in with the plants, next to it, so that there is more roots to break down the waste quicker, and effectively preventing it from building up.

It's probably mostly CO2, the end product of aerobic respiration, although there may be some other trace gases present. Anaerobic pockets tend to only form in a deep sand substrate. As Frank said, though, it's still a good idea for things to be rearranged to prevent this from happening.

mabe a small hole to let the gases escape would be a good idea!!!

just take a msall drill bit and drill a hole at the top of the pagoda...

that way the gases do not get the chance to concentrate in the tank and can be easily diffused out of the tank...

If the gas smells, it is better to remove the pagoda. If it doesn't smell, it is probably just CO2

just be careful not to break the pagoda when you drill it!!!

best if it is wet when you do it i think (much like tile cutting...

Hi Jim, if you are going to drill the ornament, I would recomend a 3/16" masonary bit, little bit of water and slow speed. Going slow will be the key here!
