I'd boil it to make sure that it's mostly sterile. I'm pretty sure that lava rock won't change your pH, but you can scratch it and pour some vinegar on it to make sure. If it bubbles then it isn't safe to put into your tank.

By the way, how was Hawaii?

it was really nice, i got to go snorkling in this bay that was full of reefs so i got to see tons of awesome fish. and i went on a sub ride to some man made reefs and ship wrecks(that were found somewhere else and put in the water) so there were tons of awesome fish there too

That sounds like way too much fun. I've always wanted to visit there .

yeah just boil it and check for carbonates and then it should be ok to put in the tank.

Boil it & then put it in a tank without fish & after a few days check the water parameters. Make sure to check the water parameters before putting the lava rock & after, so you can see any differences, if there are.

My only concern would be any rough or sharp edges...I know some of my fish get a bit insane and don't pay attention to where they are going or whatever...and let's face it you really don't want to come home and see one of your silly guys or gals with a cut or ripped fin
