Well i added some slate to my tank today and started lowering the pH to get ready to breed my Bolivian Rams. I was wondering if the location of the slate looked good (i plan on entering to aquascaping contest thats why i need to know) So any ideas?

Nice FP window you have in the corner there .

IMO you should decide if you want a natural looking tank or ...well...what you have atm. I think if you were to lose the flowerpot and add more slate in some fashion (try the corners leaving the plants for the middle where the light is) it would look alot better.

I would move it to the left side, and also take the pot out, in that way thw smothness of the slate won't contrast that much with the rock on the right.

I agree with babel and falstaf - they know what they're talking about.

I know kribs, along with other cichlids, love pots, so I would hide it behind the large rock on the left for them to breed in.

Toss the flower pot out for good it looks out of place.

You could move the slate to a general area where pot was or along the side building up to a little height at the back corner. Also some small plants in front to take away the harshness or the rock. Furthmore a tall plant could be planted behind the slate to hide the corner.

Where the slate was I would add a small piece of drift wood with small plants around it or tie some small Anubias to the drift wood, this would help link up the tank and give the eye some thing to follow at the moment it does not have that flow appeal.

It has the beginnings of I want to stay and look more at what is here, and where my eye leads me to.

I hope this helps.

They're right, it can't be in the center or it skews the whole (lovely) 'scape. And the "table" look of it is a little out of whack with the natural look of the rest of the tank, I'd pile it vertically against the side wall perhaps.

However, I disagree about removing the flowerpot - giving fish a place to breed is in some ways what it's all about! I'd just hide it behind the big rock. If it can't be fully hidden, get a slightly smaller pot - you can always enlarge the hole if need be.

Nice tank!

i don't see the "big rock on the left" you guys keep going on about i *do* see a big rock on the right though.....

anyway, i like where the slate is, i would just put a few more plants in front of the pot to hide it a little better

Simple, move the slate cave to where the pot is, and chuck the pot.

Add some sword plants where the slate was, or some crypts. It will look nice.

I would remove the slate. I would also switch the terra cotta pot out and replace it with a coconut cave. I find terracotta looks too "industrial" and modern in a naturalistic aquascape.

A coconut cave looks significantly more natural to me than terracotta.

I think a cohesive look is much more pleasing than a hodgepodge of unrelated hardscape items. More rocks of the same type as the large one would fit in far better than the slate. I think a group of smaller rocks of the same type as the large one would look very nice "randomly scattered" near the large rock or occuring as a group in another nearby area of the tank. Edit: I also think the soft brown colour and rounded edges of the big rock better compliments the sand and plants than the harsh lines and comparatively stark colour of the slate (looks more natural).

i think it's smoothness locks the gaze on it rather on the whole landscape. i don't see how you could change that by rotating it, unless you hide it completely.
you might use it for a dug-in cave, maybe, but it is so different from its suroundings it pops-out and captures attention quite badly.

Closer to the plants, it adds security for breeding fish
