But being in Sydney isn't going to help eh? If you did get beach sand, maybe bleaching it, then boiling and baking it might be in order to clean it. Why do you want to avoid silica sands? -- Gomer |

It's just normal play sand. QUIKRETE brand. I bought it from Home Depot for less than $4/50lbs. Here's a link, just so you know what the package looks like. ![]() http://www.quikrete.com/catalog/PlaySand.html |

Callatya, you might wanna try bunnings, for something like that.. Ooor Do what I did, and find a place that sells sandblasting sand, and ring them up, even if they don't have what you want, they might be able to find you something that will work. See if you can get Garnet (for that reddy pink colour) or Fusilea, (off white)... I'm still trying to get black but I have found a source for grey gravel at $7.70 AUD for 25KG!!! |

But any major home improvement store should carry some kind of sand like this. It's has larger grains then the normal play sand. Which helps keep it from becoming compacted. I guess sandblasting sand would be about the same if not better. |

Our Home Depot is known as Bunnings, (at least here in Wester Australia). They do sell fine gravel/ sand but it's about $2.00AUD a kilo. A little expensive if you ask me, and it's painted stone too, not it's natural colour, which I'm not a big fan of, but will use if I have to. |

And dissapeared into the perth hills get get some good stuff. I found the most suitable gravel, pefect size and a nice natural colour, at the bottom of a creek. Wading through thigh deep ice cold water isn't fun tho. but it gave me a chance to go hunting some really nice gnarly driftwood too. But be warned, the amount of silt in creek gravel has to be seen to be beleived! wash wash wash wash wash... rinse, repeat ![]() |
