Hello Guys,

I was at a new fish store today and the lady who served me is a big ghost knife fan. I was talking to her about her fish and she told me she has guppys and small tetras in the tank with her BGKs and doesn't experience any problems with them being eaten. She has an 8 foot tank with four BGK that are full grown or close to (18 inches). Does anyone else have a mixed tank like this and not experience waking up to find half the fish have suddenly vanished?????

Also she told me that her BGKs have mated!!! At the time she wasn't a hundred percent sure they had. But when the female became bloated and then died she cut the fish open to find out what had happened, and discovered eggs. She said that whilst they were "breeding" it was absolutely beautiful to watch as they looked like they were dancing. She said that two in her tank have also "danced" together so she may have babies.I haven't heard of anyone successly breeding BGKs. Has anyone here done so in a home aquarium??

well, what i heard from petfishtalk.net is that BGK will eat the eyes out of little fishes, but i myself had never tried, my father is a parrot/BGK fan, and we had around 40 BGK(not at once) that tank sounds full, but anyway, i only had one that made it to adult hood(b/c of bad luck with these fishes, not keeping them, but really just bad luck), and he/she was 13 inches. i would guess that if the tank is big, enough and shhe had enough to get a male and female that theyed breed. that would be a first time i heard it being done at home. so shounds good. Mine "dance" together as well but it's usually before they fight

Really? When they fight how aggressive is it? I was thinking of getting another BGK sometime down the track....but the fighting element turns me off a little!!
Do they get injuries?

I have 3 in my 180gal. The first one was by himself for over a year and then I got 2 more babies and the original one bullied the other 2 so much that I had to put them into another tank (4ft)until they got bigger. Those 2 were fine for a while but after a few months they began to fight. You'd never believe how enourmous their mouths are until you seem them go at it!
They used to fight quite a bit but they only really tore fins and if your water is good then they heal within a matter of days so not deadly fights but certainly worth keeping an eye on
When they got big enough I put them back into the 6ft and my original large BGK tried to have a go but the other 2 were big enough to stand their ground and they all tolerate each other now and only sometimes will they do that dance (which looks quite awsome btw ) and they just give up before it becomes too serious.

Just my advice joanne, if you do want to get another BGK, I would try and get it sooner rather than later so that they're closer to the same size. As it is the original BGK will have it's nose out of joint at the new man in town so it will probably not be very welcoming, being around the same size, the new guy would have a fighting chance

I would love to see them dance, I can imagine how amazing it would look.
I agree with you about the size of their mouths. I went to a site just yesterday and it had one with its' mouth open, I couldn't believe how large it was. No wonder small fish don't stand a chance
Ludo is about 9-10 inches in size now, so I think i will keep an eye out for one that has outgrown a tank. I will be a nervous wreck though.
I'm going to have to search some sites for video footage, I have to see.
Thanks for the info, much appreciated!!

Someone on the Gold Coast in australia is breeding them but keeps pretty tight lipped about how he does it. I have my BGK in my community tank but he/she is only a baby and i havent had any problems yet.

Because I live near the Gold Coast I get to hear of what's been happening almost first hand and I'll think you'll find that there's more than just one person breeding the BGKs, the secret is starting to get out and it's slowly spreading

Unfortunately not but I do remember that one of them used an outdoor heated pond and used a spraybar to simulate rain if that's any help

I have heard that, keep them in a large tank nice and warm and have a spray bar above the tank with colder water to simulate rain and give them plenty of hiding places and rocks, bogwood and other items to make caves etc and they may breed then, but will have to be adults so good 18 inch BGK's!
