My father in law got a new pleco for $80 in Halifax Canada a few months ago. It looks like a Gold nugget or Snowball pleco but the spots are lime green? Any one know what it is?

Hemiancistrus subviridis and Baryancistrus demantoides look almost exactly the same, thus they have been both confused as L200 the "Green Phantom Plec" for quite a long time until their scientific description only three years ago. As their common names suggest, you can differentiate them a little by looking at the dorsal fin, which looks longer in the B. demantoides. Also, in B. demantoides the dorsal fin is connected to the adipose fin (the second little fin behind the dorsal fin). The PlanetCatfish Cat-eLog has good pics for comparison.

I don't know about the conversion of canadian money to US, but $80 would suggest that this pleco is REALLY big, or he got cheated. Plecs are expensive but $80 is a whole lot.

$80 Canadian is $65 US. The east coast of Canada is costly for fish. My father in law pays almost 2 times what I pay in Ontario, so I do not think that he was "cheated". Just the cost of doing business in Nova Scotia.
