Any pleco besides commons, gibbies, and bristlenoses are extremely hard to find and/or illegal for import. This is because of the possibility that they will survive in Australia's waterways if they are released.

I've seen commons, gibbiceps, chocolate, sailfin, and a few others that apper to have been illegal as they weren't marked on the tank (gold nugget, zebra, etc)

I will find the lst for you tonight

All L series species and ancistrus are not on the allowable list.

The main reason we have them is due to the allowable importation prior to the new guidelines being put in place. As well as illegl imports.

For the record it is not illegal to sell them in stores (seems some here feel that it is) the only person who can be prosecuted is the actual importer.

No, its not illegal to sell them in stores, however you WILL get seriously ripped off of the supplier knows what they have in their possession.(if its worth it to you to pay that much money, then thats fine, but they will charge through the nose)

The store *should* be able to tell you the supplier/breeder when asked (if they will or not depends on many factors), otherwise i'd be taking the safe option and going for something legally imported.

Last thing you want is to pay a fortune and end up having the fish drop dead because its been either zipped through quarrantine or had no quarantine whatsoever! that'd just be the pits! ]

THAT is the problem with having stores sell them for large amounts of cash, you know nothing of their history, and there is a good chance that larger specimens are illegal imports, and their history is shady at best.

Unless you meet the breeder or know of the breeder, I'd be VERY wary of buying the rarer adult fish from a petstore that are not currently on the allowable import list (and have not been on the list in the past 3 years). The more common species, fine, but the rarer ones are still worth smuggling in for some people, I'd rather play it safe, especially since they aren't the easiest of fish to breed and grow up.

A good reputable pet store should be able to answer your questions on the origins of a fish (ask for the manager or purchasing manager).
If they act shady, or have no clue where they fish came from, well, as always buyer beware
