I'm wanted to make a trip down to San Jose, CA to mainlycichlids.com to pick up some plecos, but was wondering on how to sex some of the species I wanted to get.

They have FO Peckolitia vittatas but are also listed as clown plecos, which I believe might also be Panaque maccus. So I was wondering if someone could provide me information about sexing both species?

Also, I was wondering if anyone could provide me the current name for L52? They list it as Dekeyseria but I believe it is now Zonancistrus? Can anyone also provide me the sexing for these fish?

Both panaque and peckoltia are easy to sex based on flank side odontodal growth. Both, however, are apt to shedding them during times of prolonged stress or malnourishment, so whether you'll be able to make such a distinction on wild caught LFS stock is hard to say.

Isbrucker classifies L-52 and like species as Zonancistrus, however, as is common in loricariid phylogeny/classification, there is a great deal of debate as to whether or not they should remain dekeyseria by designation. European sources tend to use the former, the rest of the world, the latter. They are also notoriously difficult to sex as both females and males bear long odontodal growths, though females still bear less...if you want a pair, I'd suggest you look for the spiniest and the "smoothest" two fish you can find.

Cup is correct, but be it also known, that if the fish are not mature they will not show signs of the odontodal growth.

Thanks guys. The fish should be 4-5" so I might be able to get a reasonable sexing. If not then I'd probably get 4-5 of only one species.
Thanks!
