My largest female is twice the size of two of my mature males. When she's carrying a batch of eggs, the roundness is very apparent. Which is just as well, because apart from that, there are practically no other useful visual signs to tell them apart! Mind you, given that mine are well documented as being almost permanently in spawning mode, I have plenty of chances to see which is the female, because she's the one that ends up carrying the eggs in her pelvic fins. They're not in the least bit shy about spawning right out in the open where you can see them either once they're happy with your aquarium setup. Mine will even do it in front of the camera ...   |
