SO years ago i bought a spotted rapheal and the second day it went missing and today i went to go clean my tank (i have cleaned it with in the two years) and the raphael appeared it was an extremely crazy moment but when i went to scoop him up he was stuck in the net finally cut him out and put him in a bucket then picked him up in a cup and he got stuck in a cup.... Question: WHAT IS THE NOISE THAT CRAZY LITTLE FISH MADE?!?!?!?

IT SCARED THE LIFE OUT OF ME

Im not sure what you are trying to say in the paragraph but the anwser to your question is...

Raphael Catfish are also known as talking catfish and will make noise when taken out of water or in stressful situations.

they dont grunt. when scared, they will rotate their pectoral fin spines and they amplify this sound with their swimbladder

Hehe, that's a Raphael for ya. You have two examples of Raphael behavior there, it's tendency to find a place where they can't be seen and their ability to make a sound. Now that you know the Raphael is alive, perhaps you could try keeping a closer watch on the little guy, eh?

Though as a note, that sound is supposed to surprise. When a predator finds it, they'll make that sound to surprise it so they can make their getaway. Looks like it was effective for it's purpose.

Also known as the croaking catfish. I have two of these guys and really don't ever see them much accept if I rearrange the tank completely. I actually did this today also and had to remove them for a time. They let me know they weren't happy about it.

I had a Striped and he would hide in my driftwood all day and neevr see him, even at night when I would watch them he would seem to be hiding.
One day i had to catch him and the lil' blighter would not come out, he used is fins to jar himself in using the small spike at end to dig into the driftwood and took us around 2 hours to ease him out! Was a struggle but we did what we had to do, pity we had to get rid of him.

I have two striped raphaels and they are pretty social. One has doubled in size ever since I got him. He looks like a goldfish after he's eaten a lot and is over 4 inches now. They both hide a bit, but come out often for the occassional scuffle over food and territory. Haven't heard them make any sounds though, I think they are too bloody happy. *Pokes Raphaels*

They usually only make the sounds if you take them out of water.

I've been keeping them for a few years now and really the spotted ones don't grow in length too much, but they do in girth. The striped ones grow quite a bit and are much, much more social. Mine is out all of the time during the day.
