Hi can anyone tell me if I can successfully breed whiptails??
They have eggs they are keeping a close watch on and I wonder if there is anything I can do to help them???
I read an article that said they wont breed in captivity but was hoping this was an out of date book

You'd need to specify which species you're talking about.

Is this the species you are referring to? I believe there are actually many different types of whiptail cats. Planetcatfish might be your best bet to figuring out what one you have. Congrats on the spawn by the way too!

Mine have just spawned as well. It was after I missed a water change and the pH had dropped to 6 due to plants and dwiftwood. We just had a storm as well which I think triggered it.
I am told mine are LG6 or Loricariinae sp. (1) and I have sent my photo to planetcatfish to add to their collection.

A breeder told me the eggs should hatch in 5 days at which point I would either have to remove the female as she will eat the fry, or move the fry to a fry saver.

Food suggested is boiled pumpkin and zucchini.

Yeah, looking at my eggs, I think they need a few extra days as well.

An experienced breeder said to get a lettuce, vitamise it and freeze it into an icecube tray.

He also said absolutely do not feed whiptail fry any protein as its deadly for them.

All my eggs disappeared yesterday. I do not know if they hatched into the tank or if something went wrong with their formation and the male ate them.

If they hatched I suppose when they grow a bit I will be able to see them.

Actually LG6 is more of an omnivore. They don't take to vegetables particularly well. My experience with related sturisomatichthys fry have been positive with feedings of mashed peas and carnivore pellets.
