Well I am glad to hear yours is peaceful Wendy. I was a bit unsure if I should get any or if they would fight and kill my Clowns as they grew. I think that others have kept the two types successfully together though so I thought I would risk it. I am able to set up a new tank if necessary to separate them.

Fortunately there have been no problems and on the rare occasions I see them together they share the plastic tubing and bogwood fine I keep half expecting them to turn nasty, but hopefully they will remain peaceful.

I never had any problems with mine being aggressive to my corys. They would rarely try to enter his hole, and if they did he would just chase them out and not physically injure them. And when he came out of his hole (and his territory), he was perfectly peaceful. I just got rid of him because he would constantly dig up my plants once I switched to live a few years ago.

Here he is sharing an algae wafer with corys and a platy (neither of which it bothered).

Now that I read the posts after mine I realize something....

That was another reason I got rid of mine, Corys kept coming out with no eyeballs.......he would get so mad when anything went by his sea shell

He did go to a 100 Gallon tank though, with 3 other botias.

Well now that I recall, he was a nice fish and all just not for the tank I had. There was to many fish he had a chance to pick on.

He was mean but colorfull....

I loved my modesta except I had to get rid of it because the other fish in the tank were more expensive and important to me at the time. I had problems with it attacking my cories and actually eating the eyes out of at least 3 of the fish. It didnt actually go after the fish but I think it was doing it when the cories would venture into his cave. One thing you need to watch is to make sure your not getting a dyed one as they are very commonly dyed for some strange reason, they need no dye as they are VERY beautiful fish if you properly feed them.

Got one home, and he took over my clowns house, dug all over the place, and terrorized my clowns so much, that I returned him within 12 hours. The loach was about 7 inches wen I got him, and the clowns were 3, so maybe the difference in size was also part of the reason he was able to boss around.

I do like the look of them a lot, and would try and experiment with a school of 3-5 with my cichlids someday. I have heard that they are nocturnal and that must be the reason he doesnt come out that much during the day time.

based on my experiences with mine I can over the following information:

He is not completely nocternal but definately more active at night. Usually hides in a cave during the day but will come out to eat and socialize a bit.

Mine does not grow very fast, but he was already 4 inches when I got him.

I have one in a 70 gallon as well as three banded loaches and that seems fine.

I'm not sure what you have him with, but they are mildy agressive and sometimes a little hyper. Gets on fine in my South American tank.

Hope that helps.

well, i have 1 botia modesta (i will be getting more when i get a larger tank)and i have a few questions

- are they completely nocternal?
-how fast do they grow
-how large of a tank will 2 or 3 need?
-he always hides, (except at night) but as soon as it gets dark he is all over the place, at the pet store, i picked him because he was all over the glass and active, now, he hides
-when should i get him a friend?
- anything else i should know

our loach is about 5 inches. the lfs sold him to us not really knowing what he was. we didnt really know much more than he was a loach. he is lovely, and has shown no signs of aggression yet. he hides under his rock all day, with just a nose sticking out. these loaches can grow to about 10 inches, but the lfs have said tank bred ones only tend to grow to about 6 inches, so ours is nearly fully grown. should he grow any more he will have to go back to the lfs as his tank isnt really big enough.

IME they are very nocturnal. Almost as bad as my Doras but a lot worse than my Clowns - who seem most active when there is light in the room but the Aquarium lights have not been turned on.

I have three which I brought at about 1", all of which are about 3" now. One of my three has taken the Juwel Filter of the Aquarium as his home and the other two live in a large piece of bogwood in my tank. I see one most mornings make a dash from the bogwood to the filter intake but it's very rare I see one during the day other than this except for during tank maintenance.

Mine are growing quite slowly, but they are growing and are all fairly plump. They do get big of course. But IME like Clowns this takes a while.

Personally I would get another couple as soon as possible unless this would seriously overcrowd your tank. Most botia loaches do better in at least small groups and a trio is a good loach number.

As I am sure you are aware Modesta have a reputation of being tough and aggressive. I have not noticed any problems with fighting or aggression with mine but they are small compared to the other fish in the tank, all of which can look after themselves. If the loaches are in a group most of their aggression should be used against each other as they will squabble. They won't really harm each other but their chasing and fighting if transferred to other fish can cause a lot of damage very quickly. Of course they will still pick on any slow and / or large finned fish you have as well. But few loaches can resist such targets, even ones with reputations a good deal more placid than Modestas!

I used to have one of these guys in my 55 gal. He would stay in his hide out all day until night time came around. I think most of the reason for that is my Male Con and him didn't get along very well. Every once in a while he would come out in the day and it would be a war between the two of them.
