hey ppl...i recently bought a 5 inch clown loach....but something is worrying me...he is not eating...he rarely digs the gravel for food too..he'll spend most of his time in the cave which i made...moreover..the other 1.75 inch loaches do not eat as much flakes as they usually do...i added a few limestone rocks a few days ago...do u think that it might have changed the water chemistry?any suggestions on what the problem is?the 5 inch guy is not too thin nor too fat and his colouration is good though..thx...

Limestone rocks will change the water parameters. Do you know the readings of how they where & how they are now?.

Would be nice if you can post ur water stats/tank size . But as like all clown loaches when they hit a new tank its very command they wouldn't eat for a few days. I have 3 that is new to a tank and they hide for 3 days or so before they even show their self. And I dont think flake is a good food over all for clownloaches. You should feed them bloodwarm. Man all my loaches go crazy when I feed them with bloodwarm once every two days and eat till they have a huge belly. So try to feed them a little bloodwarm.

Clowns are strange creatures and you will soon realize that. I would suggest you remove the suspected limestone object just to be safe. Also remember, that the presence of a much larger clown that is constantly hiding wld influence the two younger ones to become more shy. Do you have any dither fish in the tank. I had a problem with my clowns hiding wen I did away with the yoyos, so I went ahead and added some Denison Barbs to the tank and all was back to normal.

I would remove the limestone rocks and do several water changes at least 5 days appart.

This should bring the water back to what it was. If you dont have any caves you should look into some aquarium safe rocks and making a cave/s

He needs company!!!! These fish live in packs (well, schools) of three or more. They must PLAY. And to do so, they need little friends. PLEASE buy him some clown loach tankmates, if you tank size allows. He may very well die of loneliness if you do not.

You'd have to have a monster or a tank to hold 11 clowns, what size is yours?

How big is your tank?? I am thinking of getting three 2-4 inch clowns out of my 72g and into their own 125g!!!

The price of a small clown is about $10.00 at my LFS. And that is a very baby clown. Mediums are almost $14.00 and 3 inch or more (which is difficult to find) over $20.00. A typical test kit here is $20.00 to $30.00.

If nothing else, have your LFS test your water for you.

Now, how big is that tank

Over here clowns are cheap(<$7). But the system would have to be 500 gallons plus, probably more. You're talking about 11 feet of fish!

Judging by this, I have a feeling the reply won't be too good though...

it is currently in a 60gal tank.i will change the tank as they grow...for ur info....only ONE is as long as 5 inches...the REST is 1+ inch...dont be too excited....if ur 'judgement' is right...i suppose that the lfs would need a swimming pool to house 50 of them?plus...they swim together...therefore it is ridiculous to think that 1 feet can only be suitable for a fish...thank you

Yes, but as you know, fish grow. In a few years they will be full grown and will need a much bigger tank.

if ur 'judgement' is right...i suppose that the lfs would need a swimming pool to house 50 of them?

First of all, don't insult me. I have been on this site for two years and in the hobby even longer. My "judgment" is perfectly right. It is you who is keeping fish in an overstocked tank, not I. As for the lfs, they would need a swimming pool to keep 50 full-grown clowns. However, most stores sell babies which take up much less space. The LFS only has to plan for the current size of the fish, because they will be sold eventually. However, you, the fish keeper, have to plan for the maximum size of the fish. There is a big difference.

plus...they swim together...

What does that have to do with anything?

therefore it is ridiculous to think that 1 feet can only be suitable for a fish...thank you

First of all, you're grammar is horrible. If you want to post something to argue/insult me, at least do it so I can read it. Are you trying to tell me clown loaches do not grow to be a foot long? Perhaps you should ask some other members what they think. Or maybe, you can check the profile. Wake up.

Honestly, I don’t know why you have to have an attitude like that. I’m trying to help you, as is everyone on this site. If you don’t grow up, this thread is going to turn out like the goldfish one.

hey...as i said, i will change the tank as they grow...i read ur profile...and i dont find anythg better than mine...look at your tank...1 divided 2.5 gallon 2 bettas: Sunburst, Spikes (2)?thats worse ok? and for you information, only ONE is at 5 inches and the rest is at ONE inch...they take years to grow...i acknowledge that u've been in this site for 2 years and i do appreciate ur advice...but i dont appreciate ur comment about 11 feet of fishes...its plain ridiculous.and there a few who actually placed 18 2 inch CLs in a 60 gal aquarium..and those guys are perfectly happy..currently...they do not need a bigger aquarium yet..now...just forget it...i do not want to make enemies with anyone...thank you

What are you, five? This isn't about comparing tanks. If I had a whale in my fish tank, it wouldn't make you any less wrong. However, just to humor you, let's look at my tank. The min. tank for a betta is 1 gallon, most fish keepers will agree to that. In my fish tank, each of the bettas have 1.25 gallons. So I don't see how this is wrong. And even it it was, that has absolutely nothing to do with you.

but i dont appreciate ur comment about 11 feet of fishes...its plain ridiculous.

Aren't we a bit high-strung? This is what I specifically said:
The system would have to be 500 gallons plus, probably more. You're talking about 11 feet of fish!

How on earth could you take offense to that? Unlike you're post where you question my "judgment" or try to tell me that there is something wrong with the way I keep my fish, I told you the facts without insults.
And it is true! The clown loach can reach up to 1 foot long, you have 11 clown loaches. 11fish x 1ft = 11 feet of fish! It's very simple math.

and there a few who actually placed 18 2 inch CLs in a 60 gal aquarium

Again, what other people do with their fish doesn't make what you do any better.

currently...they do not need a bigger aquarium yet..now...just forget it...

Yes, I know that. All I was trying to tell you before you jumped on my was that in the future you are going to need a tank as long and wide as your conventional dining room table if not more. You said you are going to move them, but I don't think you grasp the sheep size of the tank that will be needed. But you instead decided to try to compare yourself to others and assume that I have no idea what I'm talking about. You owe me an apology.

If you don't want to make enemies, I'd suggest you stop insluting me. Thank you.
