Hey Wendy, from what I've seen of my corries it is simply them playing, but I could be wrong...keep an eye on them and see if anything else shows up...if they are all eating and playing well with each other I wouldn't worry...my fools like to play in air bubbles, so I don't see why the sand would be any different...just make sure the sand is very smooth, and not sharp...you wouldn't want one of them to hurt their little selves...heidi

I'd suggest double checking your pH incase it has risen/fallen from where it normally sits. This could cause discomfort and flicking. If everything checks out okay then they are probably just playing.

In addition to the above:

Cories often flick around to dislodge food that has gotten stuck in their gill covers. Most fish spit food out of their mouth, take it back in, spit it out, etc. to soften it and break it down. Cories pass their food between their mouth and gill covers, where it can sometimes become stuck. If that happens, they will flick to get the food loose.

I have seen this behavior with my YoYo's they will jerk around to one side or the other. If you water parameters are nominal I agree with sir brooks you probably have nothing to worry about. Ive also seen my RTBS do this and I have had him since 1999 and he is doing well. Also, my albino cory's do this.

I have been wondering for some time if fish do this as a marking technique as well. I wonder if they are "marking their territory" like a cat or dog does. I noticed when I get new fish, say new white clouds, all the white clouds will kind of line up and flick off a leaf, whilst the new guys watch. Weird behaviour.
Also, keep in mind, sometimes fish just get itchy, like any other creature does, and it is awful hard to scratch when you have only fins

I remember Cory_Di posting a thread about 18 months or so ago called "Slamming Corys" referring to the way in which Corys will seemingly bash their gill plates against objects to try and unstick food items that have become stuck, such as Bloodworms. Plus, if Corys are healthy, they are renowned for engaging in all kinds of antics that either amuse their owners or give their owners a coronoary. In fact, one Albino cory was dubbed "Coronary Inducing Cory" because it liked to bury itself in sand ... right up to its dorsal fin. I think this was one of Cory_Addict's specimens if I remember correctly ... anywhay, the owner will doubtless come here and link the photo again for everyone
