Hi. I just bought a 29 gal aquarium and I am wanting to go with a South American Cichlid theme. I am new to Cichlids and I am open to all input. Here is what I was thinking about as far as stocking.

2 Black Convicts
2 Firemouth Cichlids
1 Candy Stripe Pleco

Thank you.

FWIW - Firemouths and convicts are actually Central American cichlids.

I'd leave out the firemouth. A pair of convicts in a 29 gallon tank, once they pair spawn, is plenty of fish (and odd are they'd kill the firemouth).

Yes, I agree, either the firemouths or the convicts but not both. If they breed either will more than likely kill off the others.

The pleco will be fine with either of those fish.

If you really want it SA, try some Acaras or Apistos. There are also several smaller species of Geophagus that would be OK in that tank.
