Hi desiredusername

strictly aquariums at beverly hills doesnt stock cichlids. I usually use st george as they have quite a large range, xtreme aquariums is also really good- TW mentioned that one.. wayne the owner is really helpful and full of knowledge. Auburn pet and aquarium centre on parramatta road has a large stock, owner there is also called wayne and he is quite helpful.
other than that there is majestic aquariums at taren point not far from xtreme which keeps cichlids.

My suggestion:
Take that treasure chest out or whatever it is!
Replace it with more rock. Not too many treasure chests in lake malawi!

C_D, what a difference. I love the look of your black substrate & background - looks great. Yep, that's what's in my son's tank. I've ordered my 2 new tanks from St George & plan buying the same gravel. I like it too. Didn't wash out son's gravel, but let the filter do the cleaning. It did this fairly quickly, but we had an empty tank - so clouding wasn't an issue with no resident fishy friends to consider. Tank was left running for one week to settle, before we added 1st fish.
haven't purchased white rock yet as funds have been a little low so making do for the moment and will purchase some shortly!
Yeah, rocks are costly. Lucky I won a task / bet with hubby last Christmas & earned myself $1k. That's what's funding new tank/s & rocks When you can afford the rocks, they will look great against your black. Agree eventually treasure chest should go, but your fish need caves until you get the rock, so until then it serves a purpose. What about a black cover for your heater too, to make it less noticeable.
was the yellow holding before or after the tank change hehe
I know you had yellow fry in the net before tank change - but are you expecting more fry now? You must be doing something right. BTW, what do you use for buffering pH up? Does the St George gravel do anything? I'll still get it anyway, as dead coral rocks will help, but just wondered. St George told me it should buffer somewhat, but not as much as their white substrates.

Driftwood looks great too & provides more hiding places. I probably have this wrong - but thought I was told to avoid driftwood in African tanks, as tanin brings brings pH down???

BTW, it's been great swapping ideas with Sydney Siders. I get great help from FP US, UK & other world-wide FP members, but often can't follow up on their advice as either product isn't available at all in AUS, or it's just to darn expensive here. (In fact, Auburn have said to my hubby that they think I'm always coming in with weird ideas from the internet - hehehe)

Wonder why Strictly have completely missed out on a whole range of customers by not having Africans. Been to several Strictly's (not all) but don't recall seeing Africans in any. At Auburn, the other joint owner is Anthony, who I prefer. They swap over a bit, but Wayne tends to be there more on Sat & Anthony more on Sun. I bought my C02 set-up from Auburn as well as some fish. Hubby gets his coral & marine fish there. I get my C02 gas filled at St George & do a lot of internet shopping with Xtreme, but go there in person for order pick-up. Bought fish & plants there too. Frequently at Majestic - but don't tend to buy their fish. Wonder if we've been in these LFS at the same time, & not known.

Don't forget to show us pics whenever you get some rocks & or alter your set-up. I think it's looking really good in the meantime /:'

Cheers

Hi desiredusername

I haven't really bought any fish on line, but I did find this link after a google search. http://www.livefish.com.au/ They have glass shrimp, but not ghost. I don't remember seeing shrimps in store here in AUS. If you see any in store in Sydney, let us know. I wouldn't mind some cherry shrimp.

Cheers

Thanks for your replies!

yep i agree with the fact that the treasure chest has to go! but for the moment its serving its purpose as a hideout and my bristlenose loves it.. however has now found a more comfy spot under the dw so i will eventually move it out once i get some rocks in.

that electric yellow did appear to be holding (good spotting!) i caught her when we moved the fish out and checked her mouth but couldnt see anything and wouldnt spit anything so let it go...a couple of days ago i had a peek inside her mouth as she was swimming around and could see tiny little eyes looking back so let it go for a bit however too late.. by the time i got around to my water change this morning she had already spat them out and i could only find one swimming in the tank so i saved it and its now safe and sound in another breeding net! hoping for some more in the future.. they are so cute and tiny!

as for the peacock.. i dont know what type it is.. he used to have 3 females to breed with but they all eventually died. so now he is all single. I did sell some fry to xtreme and was thinking of gng to see if they were still there just so he could have some tankmates but ive heard its not good to breed like that.

TW im not sure if the substrate helps buffer the PH.. to be honest the only thing i use is that salt stuff you can buy and add during water changes but i barely use it.. so really i use nothing! it all just seems to work for some reason! I find the less chemicals you add sometimes your better off.

I agree its been great swapping ideas for things in Australia and places we purchase things from.It is hard sometimes to find things that other ppl on FP from different countries talk about (ive gotten some odd looks too lol!) but at the same time it is good to discuss things and get ideas from the knowledge of all the ppl on this site!
