heys guys,my mate, just upgraded to a 6 footer,so he is selling his 3foot by 3foot cube tank,DIRT CHEEP TOO,what do you guys think of cube tanks for keeping cichlids in them,my freind had some cons and firemouths, etc, etc, smaller cichlids in it,but i tend to keep the larger more nasty fellas, its a really sturdy tank too,i never seen such thick glass,on this sized tank,it aboviously been ordered to someones specific size when bought id say.the only thing that really worries me is because of the tanks odd shape, none of my dividers will fit,and i was planning on putting my 2 smaller fhs in it,so what do you guys rekon about the cube

Why not get a divider cutsom made for it? A 3x3 glass or acrylic divider should be relatively easy to have made or you could make it yourself if you are so inclined.

Or... you could skip on putting the flowerhorns in it and do an aggressive african cichlid setup to continue the aggressive fish theme. Big rockwork / cave pile in the centre of the tank, a colony of medium sized, brightly coloured fish and viewing from 3 or 4 sides. It could make a great centrepiece in any room.

Whatever you choose enjoy it... 200g of tank space gives you lots of options

yeah ive decided to buy it,ive priced some perspex at bunnings today,so i can cut it to size,to fit properly, ive thought about doing a african tank many times, but im still having to much fun with my fhs and my sa cichlids,i will eventully do a african setup but for now im happy with my americans, now the other thing im a bit worried about,is the filtration,it only has a small external fluval filter,i think its a 304,and it also had a small internal filter, thats about 800ltr an hour, now when he had it setup, the water was clear and clean, but due to the fish i wanna keep in it,do yous rekon a big filtration upgrade is in order?

hi again,

You need to remember that at 200 gallons this is a pretty big tank so your filtration / water movement system will need to be able to handle that volume. If the tank is going to have a solid divider it would probably be best to treat it as two tanks of approx 100 gal each and provide separate filtration for each section.

I've never even seen a flowerhorn in person, let alone kept them so I have no idea of how much waste they will produce. Sorry I can't be more help

well a good sized fh will rival a oscar in terms of waste, due to there huge apitite, and they are avid diggers too, even when they are not breeding, they dig, even a samll fh,is a messy fish, and with how fast they grow,so thats why i was thinkin about a large filtration upgrade

a cube tank should be devoted to one thing and one thing only in the cichlid world.
a malawi rift system.
thankyou and goodnight.

Nope, no cube tank for me.

I'd love to see pics of your setup though.
