I was wondering if anyone had any personal advie or experiences with these fish. I might be able to get my hands on some, but I'm not sure what they are like.

I have one juvenile in a 30 gallon with a couple other juvies. I've had no trouble out of it but it is still young. everything I've read on them suggests they are not nearly as aggressive as most other Amphilophus and they don't grow too large either. I believe 10" is the most you'll see out of a male. Some say you can keep 1 or a pair in a 55 but a 75 would definitely make them much more comfortable.

I say if you have the tank to spare and the money to get them then go for it. A. lyonsi is a really cool looking cichlid that really isn't very common.

Could you send me a pic of your if you don't mind? I wouldn't mind breeding them, they are something like firemouths.

Here is my male lysoni.

It grew really fast and ate like a pig. I traded him when he was about 8" long.

polomax, I made your picture into a clickable link for you. that is a very nice looking lyonsi. mine is still very small and I don't have any pictures of it. I wouldn't compare lyonsi to a firemouth though. this species is most often compared to the trimac, though it is smaller, less aggressive and supposed to be more colorful.

I guess yeah, they really doe look like a Trimac. How do you sex them, just the typical cichlid way, males are larget with lonfer fins, and a nuchal hump.

I think females might get a black blotch in the dorsal similar to female trimacs. don't quote me on that though.
