Ok so guys i kinda want to buy an angelfish for my new 55. it should be tall eough looks like a little over two feet. id prefer to have one fish as opposed to two. i will get two if i have to i just dont want to have to worry about them pairing off. i went back through this forum and there are alot of differing opnions. can angelfish be kept singly?

The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we dont know what to do.

They can be, but being happy loner could be a totally different situation.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

OK I will rephrase my answer
Yes they can be kept by themselves.
Will it be happy? I personally would say no as most fish like to be in the company of other fish same species or not.

In other words Yes & NO to your answer.

Would I do it? definitely not.

I have a fully grown Angelfish on it's own, for the past year & i haven't seen any difference. I keep it in with some Corydoras.

Any difference to what? From a biologist's point of view I recommend to get two angels as these fish are not loners but seek each others company. There will be also plenty of space in a 55G and these fish are tuly majestic when fully grown.

The Angel still acts the same as before. It's still eating normally & the colours are still superb.

Angels in the wild are seen in loose schools. I dont think they require each others company like a true schooling fish but they might feel safer seeing others around.

I can relate to the issues with trying to pair off or have multiples. Takes a large amoutn of money just to give back "left overs". I personally keep a very nice Angel in a 29g tank but also has other fish in the tank just not other angels. Other fish would prolly serve the same purpose for security. They see other fish and think well he hasnt been eaten so it must be safe.

Just for the sake of argument i would say a lone angel woudl be fine in a 55g if other fish are present. If you really enjoy angels and dont want anything else i say get 6 of them for a 55g tank. then you dont have to worry about left overs and should be eough rom for pairs to have territory. I am just guessing by the size and temperment i see in my own angelfish. Not sure on breeding territory size. Plants to break up line of sight i cant see issues. Someone else correct me if im wrong please.

I agree with being able to keep one by its self. I keep one by its self right now with swordtails and mollys and he/she does really good. It actually likes the swordtails alot more then the mollys. lol
