It's cute! Looks CA to me - maybe a relative of the firemouth? I'm truly just guessing.

not sure but I would guess a festae or uara. Could be way off though kinda basing it on the spot near the tail.

By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

most likely a low grade flowerhorn. true trimacs are incredibly hard to come by now a days.

I see; thanks for the correction (not exactly a CA fellow myself).

Is this presented rarity a result of frequent interbreeding/no mport potential, or what?

a lot of CA cichlids in lfs are hybrids. red devils and/or midas are usually the result of a long line of crossbreeding between the 2. you never know what a "red head" cichlid is. even if it's marked as a synspilum odds are they are some combination of synspilum, bifasciatus and/or fenestratus. trimacs have been bred so much with other cichlids and with flowerhorns to get more flowerhorns that you just never know exactly what you're getting. granted with the higher grade flowerhorns it's easy to see that they actually are flowerhorns. however the lower grade ones bear striking resemblance, especially as juvies, to trimacs.

the bottom line though is that since the popularity of FH's, trimacs simply haven't been as sought after. granted there are still those out there that like their pure species and like trimacs, the general public prefers the more colorful species and that's what LFS have to cater to. there are still a few places to get pure trimacs though like Jeff Rapps and CJExotics.

It's a crying shame; at the very least, though, most serious hobbyists are vehement in their refusal to support the hybrid trade.
