well the cichlid odesy starts to take shape starting this week end (HOPEFULLY!) i will post some pic of the befores and after when i can be buggered (LOL)

any way the tank will contain 2 electric yellow (boy and girl) and maybe some bumble bee gobies or if i can get my hands on them some aussie native gobbies and a algie eater

the tank size is a aqua one AR-380 and is about 40l (should be enough to house the fish i want LFS keeper says so)

this fish unfortunalty wont go in untill july because we are going on a big holiday and i dont want my fishies to die while im gone (still trying to knock a week off of the holiday but mums being stubborn...) BUT im gonig to have a male and female fighter in there in the mean time and hopefull get them to breed!

hope all gose well doing this.....

i very much doubt that your male will spawn with your female, he will probably just kill her.
There are cerain crucial things that have to be done before putting male and female splendens together..

LFS guys tend to say anything, even if they mean well they can be well off the mark. I have an AR380 and it is a great little tank (approx 10gal small footprint model with 400lph spraybar style in-hood filter + light for those who are unfamiliar with the model ) but it is really not big enough for electric yellows as they grow. You could keep your gobies or gudgeons in there no worries though

Where abouts are you in Oz? Maybe we can find you a bigger separate tank for the cichlids so they can be happy and you can avoid expensive fish carnage, or maybe we can find you some smaller versions of the types of fish you like

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett

Honestly, i think 10 gallon is still wasted on one single cichlid that should be with a load of other malawis..
How about a pair of blue rams?

Or you could look at bolivians.. i have a couple in my 20g and they are forever breeding (though not the best parents!) they are also quite colourful and not that difficult to keep.

i would not recommend keeping electrics yellows in that size tank. They would be e to illness and are quite active as well. I have a quite a few in my 55g tank as they breed alot too (must be something in the water )

Then, in this point in time, i shall point out that silver dollars are known to eat plants.
