IMO if you're breeding you shouldn't have anything else in the tank. Most every fish will go after anythign they can eat, so if the intention is to breed it's best to go with just the breeding pair in the tank.
You can add some plants.

What would be the minimum tank size for a breeding pair then as 2 ft would seem a tad excessive

10 to 15 gal. I would go 15 and add some territories using plants and wood
