I realize cons are easy to breed, but I thought this might be helpful for anyone new to keeping and/or breeding cichlids...

1/5/07 Finalized tank setup for cons. Added gravel to existing sand, 2 terra cotta pots with drainage hole enlarged and sanded smoothe, rocks to hide pots and add more hiding places, small pieces of wood with Java fern attached and some anacharis.

Tank after refilling:

1/7/07 Purchased 2 juveniles, definitely a pair, the male is larger at ~3". Seem to be happy with each other and the new tank. Fed frozen blood worms, tank temp is 79°

1/8/07 Tank the following day, water is now very clear, fish are busy exploring. Quite surprised they haven't bothered with the plants. Feeding frozen or NLS twice per day

1/9/07 While doing some work in the 20g under the con's tank I noticed that the female wasn't leaving the pot on the left side of the tank. I got a small flashlight and noticed eggs, maybe 50. Very surprising to me after just 2 days in the tank.

The female is staying with the eggs fanning them. She does come out to eat though; they both seem to recognize me as the food source

1/10/07 This tank is near my computer desk, and while working on line today I could clearly hear gravel being moved. The male literally spent hours working on a pit in the back right corner of the tank, behind the unchosen pot.

The female seemed to want to do the same, yet every time she left the eggs he would chase her back. She doesn't allow him in with the eggs though.

1/11/07 When I went to check the eggs today I noticed movement, maybe 25% were wigglers. By evening there were maybe 3 or 4 eggs left, I would assume unfertilized or bad. Wigglers are all in a pile at the bottom of the pot. One or two have risen above the group but mom moves them back. Mom and dad take turns watching them now though.

1/11/07 Wigglers still in the same place with mom doing more of the guarding now. Took a peek into the pot before lights out, in addition to the wigglers there are now new eggs as well!

Will have to try for some pics tomorrow...

1/15/07 The new eggs were either eaten or unfertilized. The wigglers were moved out of the cave today into a pit in the front of the tank. I'll mix some fry food and use the baster at feeding time.

This is such a cool log. It is great you have pics. That is really exciting to have those fry. They are really cut looking. Good luck and have fun!

Those are sweet, it'd be cool to watch them as they mature.

2/10 Second spawning, this time on the end of a log right at the front of the tank. Looks to be approximately the same number of eggs as last time.

Fry are pretty much free-swimming at this point, mom and dad frantically trying to keep them in a group. I'll have to work on getting some new pics.
