I have a 29 gallon tank. All i want is one cichlid in it. The three i am most interested in is a jack dempsey, oscar, or a convict. Is this at all ossible. I really want either a jack dempsey or an oscar but i will take a convict. All I want is a smart cichlid w/ personality and is aggressive, so I can feed it feeder fish.

Feeder fish arent always a good idea. Most carry diseases and parasites that you dont want in your tank. If you really want to go with feeders I suggest you breed your own.

thats what i would do with the feeder fish. But what kind of fish could i get. Are there any other types of cichlids I could put in there? I kind of want a big one, that is smart, aggressive, and will learn to recognize me.

P.S. Betta Chris, would it be ok if i only got one oscar or jack dempsey?? Instead of more than one. Because all I want is one big cool fish, preferably not a pair of fish.

Oscars need 75 gallon minimum for a tank. I dont know much about JD's but I know they get big 10" I think.
Really if you want a large cichlid you probably want a bigger tank.

u have the right idea about the fishes you want, but unfort. these fishes are great pets, but as you can imagine, they are not small fish, and larger tanks are a must for these fish,

if you really want a fish like that, i saw a red devil that would be exactly what you looking for, however they are a big fish, and if you can get a 75 + gallon tank, so you have the fish you want.

We had an oscar in a 75gl with a jack dempsey. The oscar grew so much quicker than the other and then started to run the tank. The final straw for me with the oscar was when it drew blood when I fed her one day. I would not mix them because the oscar takes over the tank very fast. If you want a fish with "killer" personality get the oscar, but would think real hard about tankmates.

small and mean. well this depends on your definition of mean. i have a tank of Multi shelldwellers that are 1inch to 1.5inches. there is a movie with a colony of these fish attaching a croc passing through their territory. they protect thier young as a group.

convicts arnt really mean unless breeding but i suppose if you think about it thats pretty much allways lol.

how about one of those pencilfish. they are really long and thin and take out fish twice their width. have a bunch of teeth ect lol.

Mean does not not necessarily equal personality (recognizing you etc).

there is a movie with a colony of these fish attaching a croc passing through their territory

There's a video at Cichlid-Forum.com of an occie attacking a gravel vac, really funny

Please don't try to put these large fish in a small tank simply for entertainment purposes

personally i think one Jack dempsey would be fine in 29 gallon.... I have a pair of them in my 40 breeder and they have been great pets....i had them almost 2 years and the male is about 10inches and the female is about 6 or 7 very nice fish...but if you do put just one in there you are going to have keep up on your water changes etc. Another interseting cichlid is the Firemouth they get about 6inches there pretty cool you could maybe do a pair of them.
