Bob Wesolowski Mega Fish Posts: 1379 Kudos: 1462 Registered: 14-Oct-2004 | Jimmy, Water quality is much more important to discus then swimming room. Asian breeders regularly shatter the XXX gallons per adult fish rule but they generally do 100% water changes per day. A fully grown (6 inch) discus should have ten (10) gallons of water. Again water quality is much more important than swimming room. I have had 5 adult discus breeding in a 30 gallon planted aquarium. Of course, I was doing 50% water changes each day! If you keep your nitrates to a minimum ( plants help) and great water conditions, you should be able to squeeze an extra fish or two into that 96 gallon box. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

Fish Guy Mega Fish Posts: 1091 Kudos: 1254 Votes: 2 Registered: 28-Jan-2004 | As mentioned before when dealing with Discus water quality is everything, but I'm not sure if you want to be doing 50% water changes everyday. But with a bigger tank, its more forgiving, so I would probley go with 5-6 full grown discus in that size tank. You would be able to put some others in the tank aswell, such as cories and maybe a few blue rams. The different colors wont matter in terms of them getting along. |

The measure is perfect for the guy who thinks that a 30% water change once a week is great water quality. If you are inclined to maintenanc e and water changes, you can go less... You mentioned growing out 2 - 3 inch fish. Juvenile discus are tender. Their immune systems have not fully developed so they are susceptible to the slight quality problems. If you intend to grow out fish, I would buy a dozen for the tank but not plant the tank or put in any substrate, just a bare box with water, heater filter and hardscape such as driftwood. The reason for the minimal surroundings is that it will be easy to clean as you will want to feed the fish 3 to 4 times per day. The fish should grow to 4 - 5 inch size within 6 months at which time you have your adults for the planted tank! However, I have never ever listened to my own advice when I advocated taking the time to do things the right way when I could have it my way today! You should be able to place those same dozen juveniles in the planted tank but their growth will be much slower and they may have some fits and starts with their health. I apologize for the colloquialisms in my English, I hope that you catch my meaning... __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

JIMMY319126 Fingerling Posts: 23 Kudos: 16 Votes: 1 Registered: 07-Jan-2006 | dont apologize i catch some cuz u know i see a lot of movies sooo u say dozen its a sweet number can i keep this in bare tank but why dozen to make them feel safer or what for fun??? and what i catch from ur colloquialisms english that u say i can challenge rules and put the dozen in the planted tank but i should give them more care now my final decision i will buy 8 Juveniles and grow them out in a planted tank and do 10~15% water changes every day(is this enough water changes or what u recommend??) agreed or whats ur comment??? |

Children eat a lot and poop a lot. The food that they miss and the food that they process will foul the tank. Water changes and tank maintenance are the least expensive things that you can do to keep healthy fish. Tank maintenance is cleaning your filter , vacuuming the substrate and doing whatever you can to eliminate nitrates. Never worry if your water changes are more than 15%, I have routinely done 50% water changes in my planted discus tank. The large water changes seem to perk the fish up...
