i would suggest around just under 100, for the fry. as they will feed of the parents it is important to keep in mind there tank size, but for a beginner breeding will be almost impossible unless you can keep them alive, and certainly not with hardly ever tank water changes.

dont forget that discus need very clean water and should have more acidic water. and my friends discus are in a 240 and these discus are massive. so a 3-4 125-90 tanks would be needed.

Once a pair establishes itself as a mated pair, usually by spawning, it is best to move them to a breeding tank. Generally, the 20G tank is set up with a pottery cone or PVC pipe as a spawning surface with a sponge filter. No decorations, plants or other fish.

The 20G size makes it easier to lower pH and hardness for spawning and egg fertilization. The bare bottom makes for easy tank maintenance and the sponge filter ensures that the tiny fry are not sucked up a tube and diced by an impeller.

Once the fry become nickel size, it is best to wean them from their parents and provide 4 to 5 time daily feeding of brine shrimp or daphnia. The fry can be placed in a 55G for grow out to 1.5 inches. Too large of a tank for the fry will make it difficult to find food.

I actually clean my water and do water changes frequently and I have bred many things, but yes i am still a beginner. But would a 55g work for breeding?
