My Ps. Elongatus tends to swim up and down the right side of my tank - repeatedly.

He will do this for extended periods of time - not all the time, but usually a few times a day. Just up and down, up and down.

Is the fish stressed, or is it demonstrating some type of specific behaviour?

Outside of this, it eats well, is alert, and exerts itself in social situations (as a good cichlid should!). No obvious signs of disease either.

Any ideas?

Ive noticed that happening with my kuhli loaches....I am wondering the same thing as you! So far though, it really just seems to be a lack of swimming space for my kuhlis i guess...

Good luck to the both of us!

Is he in with alot of stronger fish, which are forcing him to one bit of the tank?? Does he have plenty of hidy holes to choose from, so he can hide away and relax??

The hiding issue could be the cause.

I recently re-did the rock arrangements when I added some new fish (1 larger Blue Ahli and 3 peacocks). The Ahli kind of took over his old stomping grounds (a prime piece of rock real-estate) so he has been a bit homeless.

I've noticed he is trying to 'negotiate' with the Ahli for a share of his old cave, but has also been muscling the labs out of thier driftwood home.

I'll give it a few days, hopefully everything irons itself out. The elongatus is clearly #2 in the pecking order, so I don't think he will be homeless for long.

He's definitely not the poor weakling in the community - so it should actually be quite interesting to watch unfold!

Thanks all.

That is probably the issue then.

If I rearrange my tanks, I remove the stronger fish for a few days to let the weaker ones settle in.

Once you add the dominant fish, they are on the back foot for awhile and aren't so pushy.

Good luck!
