My BF is in the process of moving from a house to a small apt and isn't sure if he's going to have a spot for his firemouth Gordie. I have plenty of space to set up another tank, be it in my house or one of the offices I work at but I'm not sure I really have the time to care for another tank. I already have a 5, a 10 and a 29 going at home, a 20 long that is going to be in one office and a 55 in the other office. I do have space for Gordie in the 55 but I'm not too sure how he will be with the Angels and Golden Gourami (and plants) in the 55. I really don't know much about Firemouths. Should I try it and be prepared to move him if necessary?

The firemouth will probably beat the crap out of the angels, unless its an unusually placid specimen. Angels can be moody but theyre not equipped to fight off a firemouth cichlid.

I wouldnt advise it wholeheartedly, but you can try it. Be prepared to watch them a lot though, it might take a day or two for things to kick off. If a fight does break out you might have to move fast, a firemouth cichlid will pretty much break an angels jaw clean off if a mouth fight does break out, and angels when properly attacked and shaken can succumb to shock really quickly. Its entirely at your own and your fish's risk.

No doubt some bright spark will pipe up about having some they keep together, but all the same ,I wouldnt advise it.

Thanks! I guess I'll bring Gordie to the other office to live. I really don't want anything to happen to the angels and since I'm only at that office in the mornings, I can't keep a close eye on him.
I wonder if the profile should be changed here since it says that firemouths are territorial but "peaceful when not spawning". (even though I thought otherwise, thats why I asked)

Thats probably a good idea, a lot of cichlids being peaceful is kinda relative and in most cases depends on you having an aquarium of "equals" ie , similarly built and equipped fish capable of putting up a decent defence. Some cichlids are peaceful, angels for example are one of them , a lot of the small rams , and kribs arent too bad, but anything much bigger can be real trouble. A lot of the entries of "peaceful" in the normal bodied cichlid profiles need to be changed. They might be peaceful in aquariums where there is a deterrent against the violence, but in a general non-aggressive community a lot of smaller fish or fish less able to fight because of their physical features are dogmeat when a cichlid is introduced.

Would you mind doing it for the firemouth? I'm sure you can explain it better than I can!

I've kept three firemouths together with a pair of breeding angelfish before and it worked out fine, mainly because there were other fish in the tank (giant danios, some cats, etc) in a 55 gallon
