About a day and a half ago I got a little Jack Dempsey. He's about two inches long. Is it possible that the minipellets of Hikari cichlid staple are too big for him? I have bloodworms - should I only feed him this for a while? Or cut the pellets?
I cut one of the pellets and he fit it into his mouth much more easily, but he spit it out right away. How can a cichlid not like cichlid staple? Or is it too early to tell, yet?

I wouldn't think the pellets are too large, and they do soften in the water. It's possible that he's just not used to them. You could continue cutting them if you feel like it. I personally wouldn't go with bloodworms simply because he'll get used to and prefer those and then you'll really have trouble getting him to accept regular staple food.

Good luck

You're always so helpful. I think I'll just give him the staple until he gets used to it. I saw him open his mouth really big one time, so now he can't use that as an excuse.

Thank you

I think fish in general are more capable than we give them credit for, although when they're new and/or young it's difficult not to worry. How often are you feeding him? If twice a day, cut back to once; if once per day maybe skip a day and then see how he reacts to the food.

i always soak my pellets for a few min. just to soften them up as it makes it eaiser for the fish to eat and also does not allow the pellets to expand in the fishes stomoch when the do absorb the water.
