right now i have a 3.5" male convict in a 20 gallon by itself. i want to move him to a 40 gallon along with a firemouth. should i put the convict in the 40 first, or wait until i have both fish so that the convict doesn't establish territory? should i get a male or female firemouth? should it be bigger, or the same size as the convict? any other tips or advice? thanks for any help.

I would wait and intorduce both of them at the same time. If you have a good few caves and some plants to break up the tank you should have very little aggression problems. I would try to get a male firemouth and probely at the same size as the convict.
