Hi all. I am soon (this afternoon) getting a jack dempsy from the in laws. Having never had ciclids of any type, what do I need? what size tank, setup etc would be reccommended? Any help would be appreciated. I do have two community tanks but never anything aggressive so he'll be alone at least for the time being.

Depending on how big the fish is and how aggressive it is, would depend on how big of a tank you need and if you could keep anything with it. Myself, I'd say at least a 55 gallon to start with, and filtered at least 3-4 times more than the tank.

My only cichlid so far is my flower horn and i have him in a 55g with 2 filters and i'm rated about 400gph. And I learned the hard way when he was growing up, that he has to be alone.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

In a 55g with good filtration (like 5-10x turnover rate, e.g. an Aquaclear 110) you could have a pair of dempseys,

i have been keeping cichlids for years and i reckon they are all different, they dont demand massive tanks to survive as long as there is no one else in the tank to bother him, just dont put any plants in there because they think they are chew toys lol. You could try getting him/her a mate though but it all really depends how aggressive he really is.

Cheers

Well, here's the history. About 5 or 6 years back my nephew developed an interest in the hobby and did the research and all, got a tank and some fish. The jack is the only survivor, as he has destroyed everything put in with him. As years went by the interest waned and the fish came to me, as well as his tank and supplies. I have essentially doubled his tank size, he is in a 37 gal bowfront instead of the old 20g. It'll be a nice tank if I can ever get it clean. Put a thick layer of gravel and caves, he took a liking to but then I added some plastic plants and floaters and I think he enjoys the tank even more with the added cover. But due to his history of aggressive behavior I think he'll stay solo.
