I'm setting up another tank to house my JD as he and the flower horn are starting not to get along. And I was just about to figure out that I have a male JD and a female flowerhorn. and wanted to set up the JD tank with a sand substrate. and actually thinking about slowly changing the FH tank to sand also

Anybody done this before? i'm wondering how well these guys and girls do with sand.

They would probably be okay, however I've never used sand in any of my tanks so I don't know for sure.

I think my biggest concern would be that they dig a lot, which is going to keep the sand stirred up and it may cause a problem with your filters. I guess if you screened your intakes on the filters that may work, but then your cutting down of your flow which in itself could cause some filter problems.

Sand can often be a bit of a cleaning nightmare compared to gravel, it has a nasty habit of completely surrounding poo and uneaten food, creating a nasty little bacterial pocket, and releasing toxins into the water. Its often rendered unsightly by algae too. Remember this isnt a marine system, it could get very messy. Stick with fine grained gravel, its much better for freshwater purposes.

well i'm going to be using play sand. and as far as the filter, i'm going to be making my first sump on this one, so that i'm not worried about. as far as everything else, i've been researching on every possible issue, getting alot of it from the salt water areas.

I wanted sand this time as i hear it looks alot better in alot of tanks.

I just really was looking to see if anybody had done this with these guys
