Well the Madagascar ciclhids have spawned in the smaller holding tank...they are waiting for a 175 G tank to cycle.

I have a couple of photos of them all coloured up....eggs have been hidden in a small ditch behind the main rock.

Very excited!!

Nice! Great to see endangered species are thriving in captivity. What are you going to do with the fry?

They are only eggs at the moment.

Once they are swimming I will probably move some to a breeding net....not sure how good the parents will be....they may eat, not sure.

Yes they are polleni.

They are vry active fish. As soon as you go near the tank they are right up in your face. If you place your finger on the glass the female goes nuts....tries to bite it.

They are fairly aggressive, whenever I put my hand in the tank to do anything the male tries to bite all the time....he has caught me out a few times.

Not sure that they are endangered....some species in the same family may well be.....not too sure.

Wow, good job! Didn't take too long at all, it seems, lol.

P. polleni is in fact classified as "Vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. This is because of its limited distribution combined with fragmentary habitats that are in increasing danger due to deforestation.

Yeah, the male is the bigger fish.

They are only in a small 180 litre tank....they will be moved into their 660 litre tank once it has cycled.

I dd not expect them to spawn in the small tank....just fight! Plenty of hidy holes for the female, so she can get away from the male.

I don't think I am going to see any fry from this spawning, just noticed that the male has covered the eggs over with gravel....might have to rescue the eggs....I always like to see if they will be good parents and look after them themselves first.

See how they go.

That was fast. Once they start producing, they do not stop. Polleni are highly prolific in that sense.

Fantastic news Cavey!

"just noticed that the male has covered the eggs over with gravel"

Perhaps he thinks he is a trout .

I saw about 20 fry of that fish in a store at sutherland and each and every one of them had a massive poop string hanging out of it. I wasnt sure if that was a healthy thing so I didnt buy any.

Well looks like the eggs are gone!

I actually bought the pair from a local store.

Not sure how old they are, but the male must be a few years old, as he is quite large.

Did they spawn on a rock surface or just droop the eggs in a gravel pit?

Only I'm not up to speed with the habits of the Madagascans yet.

Once you get the big tank cycled and ready for them, try providing them with a big flat piece of slate to spawn on if they don't have one currently. That might improve your breeding results, but only might, depending upon what these fishes do in the wild.

A quick browse of The Cichlid Room might be in order for these fishes.

Just checked - they have a nice article on your very fish, namely this one.
