as far as i have read needle fish are to be kept ony with themselves. but you might be able to get away with some rams... most of the cichlids that get big would be too aggressive for the needle fish and you would probably want to stray away from anything too small as the needle fish might eat it... how big is the needle fish and how big is it mouth?

you might be able to keep a couple rams in there with him...

you dont want anything too small or agressive.

maybe try somethng less expensive first. then see how it goes. mayvbe a couple small oscars would work, but they might gangh up on the poor needle fish. hoonestly i haven't kept needle fish so i wouldnt know except i have read that anything that can fit in its mouth is fair game. but they are also a delicate fish so you dont want agressive. maybe try some tiger barbs or tinfoil barbs. get them at a semi larger size and you should be fine.
