I currently have a long established 45 gal. containing 4 Malawi Golden, 2 male, 2 female and one Red Zebra male.

The Goldens (I inherited 10 fry and have lost 6 over the past year to their own fighting)have always been aggressive and are still picking on each other. It's really the two females because the males have staked their land claim pretty good. My plan is to redo the tank layout to mix up the territories but would it be better for their health if I slightly overstock at the same time?

If so, what would you recommend?

No ideas from anyone?

I stopped by my LFS this morning and they have a decent assortment of small and juvenile cichlids but I'm real concerned about adding them into my mix.....I hate losing fish.

Well, since it's an established tank and the occupants have pretty much made it their's I wouldn't add any other fish that are smaller and younger than they are as they will probably just become easy targets for the larger fish.

If wanting to add new fish, then rearranging the tank at the time of the addition may help with some of the aggression, but I really don't think that much. Cichlids are just naturally aggressive for the most part and they are going to protect the area that they think is their's. That's one of the traits that attracts many of their fans.
