Apparently, a fish exporter released individuals of Cynotilapia afra at Mitange Point, Thumbi Island, a long way from their natural range, and it appears that they've been doing something interesting. Namely, they have started to develop into two genetically distinct populations, one on the north of the island, one on the south, and indeed are providing scientists with the distinct possibility that the fishes may be engaging in incipient speciation as we watch. Fascinating stuff, and not just for the African Cichlid fans either ... ![]() ![]() |
