Is there such a thing as a non-agressive mouthbrooder?
Or one which doesn't require a humungous tank?

I know you're in cichlid central, but there are species of fish that aren't cichlids that brood their young in their mouths. Are you specifically looking for cichlids?

Yep.
Egyptian Mouthbrooders, Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor tend not to be so aggressive, easy to get hold of, cheap to buy and easy to spawn.

What other fish beside cichlids are mouthbrooders?
The Egyptian one was the one I was considering.
I just thought my kids might like seeing the parenting displayed by a mouthbrooder.

There are a few that would be good in a small tank, such as some of the Betta species. In a Tanganyikan tank, Phyllonemus typus is AFAIK the only catfish species that mouthbroods outside of the family Ariidae; P. typus would not need a large tank either. Otherwise, arowana, cardinalfishes, and jawfishes are other examples of mouthbrooders.

On second thought, I'm not sure of the availability of these species in Australia.

Avoid p.nicholsi if you want peaceful one, the males of mine ( two males 4 females) are evil with their own females and any other midswimming fish, cichlid or not, and the males loathe each other on sight. Some of these species need more room than you might imagine on grounds they dont really pair like other cichlids, when not actively breeding mine dont like to be associated in close proximity at all. Even in 40 gals the females still get a kicking, I have to keep them segregated most of the time.
